Please see the below update and attached slides from the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans/Baton Rouge and State Climatologist, Jay Grymes.
- There is still some uncertainty for this event.
- There is high difficulty in the forecast as very small shifts will lead to very large changes in impacts.
- Most confident portion of the forecast:
- Cold and bitterly cold at that.
- An Arctic airmass will move in late this weekend impacting the entire area through much of the work week.
- Cold Weather Advisories and even Extreme Cold Warnings are possible if not expected, mainly for wind chill values ranging from the lower teens to lower 20s.
Sunday
- Temperatures will remain cold Sunday with Highs in the upper 30s across northwest LA and in the 40s over southeast LA.
Monday
- Very cold night with Cold Weather Advisories or Extreme Cold Warnings anticipated.
- Multiple hard freezes are forecasted for our area Monday through Wednesday with a possibility of wintry precipitation on Tuesday.
- At this time, there is a 37% probability for less than 1” of snow in East Baton Rouge (valid Monday night through early Wednesday morning).
- These probabilities continue to rise and a 30-40% probability is rather high 4 to 5 days out.
- There is also a lower than 20% probability of greater than 0.01 ice accumulation (valid for Monday nightthrough early Wednesday morning).
- Main concern is along and south of I 10.
- These probabilities continue to drop with now near or lower than 20% probability.
Tuesday
- Another very cold night, Cold Weather Advisories or Extreme Cold Warnings continuing. Greatest concern is temperature may not warm much with much of the state remaining below freezing IF winter weather is occurring Tuesday.
Wednesday
- If temperatures do not warm above freezing Tuesday many locations may stay below freezing for 36 or more hours until finally climbing above Wednesday.
