Please see the below update from the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans / Baton Rouge and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) regarding Potential Tropical Cyclone Six.

  • Potential Tropical Cyclone Six is forecast to become a tropical storm later today. Forecast has shifted a little more to the east and still has it strengthening into a hurricane before landfall on the Louisiana coast.

  • The system is forecasted to become a hurricane before it reaches the northwestern Gulf Coast by the middle of the week.

  • Specific impacts will depend on the eventual track and structure (size, intensity, etc) of the storm. Keep in mind that because the storm currently lacks a defined center of circulation, there could still be relatively large shifts in the forecast.

  • Potential Tropical Cyclone Six is expected to bring heavy rainfall and the risk of considerable flash flooding along the coast of far northeast Mexico, portions of southernmost Texas, southern Louisiana, and southern Mississippi into Thursday morning.

    • Currently, widespread rainfall totals of 4-8" are forecast with locally higher amounts, between Tuesday morning and Friday evening. Most of this rain will fall between Wednesday morning and midday Thursday. With

saturated soils from recent heavy rains, this additional rain could quickly lead to ponding of water in low lying and poor drainage areas or isolated to scattered areas of flash flooding. Rises on area rivers are also likely but will depend on where the heaviest rain falls.

  • Gusty to damaging winds will be possible mainly on Wednesday and Wednesday night, with the strength of these winds highly dependent on the eventual track and intensity of the storm.

  • A few tornadoes may be possible Wednesday through early Thursday.
