Please see the below the National Weather Service update concerning the winter weather threat:
A Hard Freeze Watch and Wind Chill Advisory from Monday 9:00 PM until noon Tuesday.
We can expect additional weather-related watches and warnings to be issued.
Below is a daily forecast of the weather threats:
- Monday - Light rain will be spreading across the area Monday during the day. Temperatures drop below freezing overnight, and the rain will change to freezing rain. Dangerous wind chills around 16° after midnight.
*Primary timing for precipitation is 6:00 PM Monday to 9:00 AM Tuesday.
- Tuesday - Precipitation will move east mid-morning, below freezing temperatures (lows of 27°) will remain throughout the day.
- Wednesday - Forecast to be the coldest temperatures of the event with wind chills dropping to 15°.
- Thursday - Early morning hours will begin to see a rise above freezing low of 34°.
Roads
LA DOTD is reporting road closures around the Shreveport area, they are anticipating additional closures as the weather moves further south.
City-Parish DPW has activated its Freeze Plan and stands ready.
Utilities
The Baton Rouge Water Company is on standby to assist customers in turning off water service should water pipes break due to the forecasted freeze. They have scheduled staff and winterized facilities to ensure BR Water can provide a continuous water supply to customers during and after this event.
Shelters
St. Vincent de Paul's Bishop Ott Shelter Program has initiated its plan for the upcoming cold nights (39 degrees & below). They will expand bed capacity for men, women, children, and families experiencing homelessness during the cold days and nights to come.
The Center of Hope is preparing additional supplies and beds to accommodate the potential additional people. The Salvation Army will be attempting to collect some jackets/coats to disperse at the shelter for those who do not have appropriate clothing. They are also preparing their kitchen for the possibility of having to prepare more food and adjust accordingly. Operational hours will be adjusted as the weather updates come in, but as long as it is 34 degrees and below, the shelter will remain open.
